The Governor of the Bank of Israel, Professor Stanley Fischer, has announced the list of personalities to appear on the planned new series of banknotes that will be issued in the next three years. The series will consist of denominations of 20, 50, 100 and 200 shekel.
Yesterday (Wednesday March 9) the Governor met with the Committee for the Planning of Banknotes, Coins and Commemorative Coins, headed by retired Judge Yaacov Turkel, and informed the members of the Committee that he has accepted their proposal to depict the following personalities on the new series of banknotes: Natan Alterman, Leah Goldberg, Shaul Tchernichovsky, and Rachel the Poetess.
The members of the Committee and the Governor consider that featuring these personalities on the banknotes will help to instill in the younger generation of Israelis an appreciation of their contribution to Israeli society and to the state.
The Governor thanked the members of the Committee for their recommendations and for their dedication and efforts in this matter, and stated that he would submit the list of names to the government for approval.
