The Bank of Israel, as previously publicized, plans to issue a new series of banknotes over the next few years. With the completion of the planning stage, the determining of the figures whose portraits will appear on the new series of banknotes, and their approval by the government, the Bank of Israel announced on May 15, 2011, a public competition for the design of the banknotes. About 80 designers entered the competition, submitting over 100 preliminary designs.
The designs were judged anonymously, and a professional committee chose twenty designs from the entries. The committee members were Prof. Dan Reisinger, graphic designer and winner of the Israel Prize in design; Prof. Yarom Vardimon, graphic designer and winner of the Israel Prize in design; Mr. Adi Stern, graphic designer and Head of the Visual Communication department at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design; Mrs. Ruth Rahat, graphic designer and consultant to the Bank of Israel on the design of the new banknotes; Mr. Lior Lichtman, Head of Issue Unit in the Bank of Israel Currency Department; Mrs. Sara Cohen, Bank of Israel Research Department employee; and Mrs. Anna Vinitsky, Bank of Israel Currency Department employee.
The designers of the twenty entries chosen by the committee were asked to submit design works for the four denominations (20, 50, 100, 200) of the new series, and the same committee chose ten entries from those submitted.
Those ten design works were reviewed by the Committee for the Design of Banknotes, Coins, and Commemorative Coins, headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Jacob Turkel. The committee regularly advises the Governor of the Bank of Israel on currency design issues. The committee chose three designs which were submitted to the Governor, who picked the winning design, which will appear on the new series of banknotes, as well as the second and third place winners. The top three designs won cash prizes (NIS 150,000, NIS 100,000, and NIS 50,000).
The first place winner is Ms. Osnat Eshel.
The second place winner is Mr. Ruben Nutels.
The third place winner is Mr. Peddy Mergui.
The designs of the various denominations will be produced over the next few months, together with Ms. Eshel, the designer, as well as with the banknote printer, so that the designs will be able to be developed into actual banknotes, which include new security marks currently being evaluated by the Currency Department.
The winning designs will only be published close to the date of issue of the banknotes to the public.
The Bank of Israel plans to issue the first two banknotes of the new series in the first half of 2013, and the other two in the first half of 2014.
