Recent Economic Developments, 103

Overview:

Developments between April and September 2003 (the period reviewed) attest to the stabilization of economic activity at the low level reached after over two years of deep recession. The la=test indicators of real economic activity produce a mixed picture. The state-of-the economy index fell throughout the period reviewed, its rate of decline moderating slightly in June and July, then accelerating in August and September. The development of this index reflects the continued slackness of both domestic and global demand despite the economic recovery in the US, Asia, and Latin America. The Companies Survey, on the other hand, reflects the deceleration of the contraction of activity in most industries, and even a moderate rise in some of them.
